The interaction between humans and computers has been on a constant evolution. From ENIAC’s introduction in the 1800s to possibly every individual owning a computer system in the 20th century, technology and humans have together come a long way.

It would be apt to term this last decade of computing as the ‘Cognitive’ decade, owing to the impressive and fundamental revolutions that we have been able to achieve. Cognitive computing is the advanced technology of interaction between humans and machines, which lets a user provide inputs to a computer in a layman’s language. And the base of this concept all relies on data — the more the data, the better the search results. Cognitive search essentially churns out tons and tons of data such as images, product details, catalogues, videos etc. to arrive at conclusions. This is why you see organizations obsessing over gathering data in the form of customer feedback, call recordings for trainings and monitory purposes, product trials etc.

In this post, let’s look at some of the trends the industry has been witnessing:

· Organizations are aiming at making their Intranet as easy and sleek as widely accepted Google and Bing searches. Pivoting on cognitive capabilities, enterprises are working towards streamlining their internal content search management systems.

· Open source search engines are gaining popularity as against the enterprise platforms that are usually expensive. Some of the popular platforms include Apache Solr, Sphinx Search Server, Fess, ApexKB, Constellio and Terrier.

· With Alexa and Google Assist having shot to fame, voice recognition is anticipated to make a swift foray into workplaces as well. Voice enabled enterprise search sounds like a promising bet, allowing employees to have the right information at their disposal, at a snap of their fingers!

· SaaS continues to be the popular model for computing workloads, owing to factors such as easier deployment and shorter release cycles.

· With hyper personalized experiences becoming a norm — be it any industry, greater emphasis is being laid upon user interaction. For instance, cognitive based virtual assistants would soon be widely accepted in the travel booking sector, that would offer users a completely personalized and customizable travel plan, based on their preferences and user history.

· Cognitive search is witnessing a massive acceptance across industries such as healthcare, travel, finance and transportation. Companies foresee a heavy value in the field of cognitive study and hence there are huge investments in the R&D. Innovators of these fields are on a mission to understand the complex problems and resolve these for human assistance.
